Description

Captured ship: Magdalen or Michell of London (master John Madder).

History: an English merchant ship (200 tons) bound from the Kola Peninsula in Lapland to London, laden with stockfish; taken on 4/14 September 1694 off Great Yarmouth by a French privateer, retaken on 13/23 September 1694 off the Downs by Cloudesley Shovell's squadron, after the prize crew abandoned the ship on sight of the fleet.

Court Papers numbered CP 1-CP 5:

  • [CP 1]: attestation as to the ship's capture and voyage;
  • [CP 2]: claim to the ship and cargo on behalf of merchants in London;
  • [CP 3-CP 5]: commissioner's affidavit, inventory, commission of appraisement.

[Decision: ship and cargo restored, paying salvage 27 September 1694].
