Description

Captured ships: Juffrouw Maria or Madam Mary of Rotterdam (master Joost Jansen van der Goos).

History: a Dutch merchant ship (flyboat, 250 tons) bound from Newcastle to Hull, laden with lead, coals, tar; taken on 16/26 May 1691 by the French privateer Triponne (Jean Glasson commanding) retaken on 18/28 May 1691 off Calais by HMS Lyon (Robert Wyseman commanding), and brought into the Downs. The ship was captured along with the Seaflower.

Court Papers numbered CP 1-CP 11:

  • [CP 1]: one examination;
  • [CP 2]: claim to the ship and cargo on behalf of merchants in London, Amsterdam and Rotterdam;
  • [CP 3-CP 5]: two attestations issued in Rotterdam, with translation;
  • [CP 6-CP 8]: inventory, commission, docket;
  • [CP 9]: abstracts and translations of the 7 ship's papers [most of these were restored];
  • [CP 10-CP 11]: wrapper and brief note relating to the ship's papers;

Ship’s Papers numbered SP 7, a copy letter of marque belonging to the Triponne.

[Decision: ship and cargo restored, paying salvage 16 June 1691].
