Description

Captured ship: Juffrouw Hedwig or Madam Hedwig of Stockholm (master Magnus Grabergh).

History: a Swedish merchant ship (170 tons) bound from Bordeaux to Stockholm, laden with wine, brandy, paper, prunes, sugar andmolasses; taken on 11/21 July 1697 off Ushant by HMS St Paul (John Mitchell commanding), and brought into Plymouth.

Court Papers numbered CP 1-CP 16:

  • [CP 1-CP 2]: five examinations, docket;
  • [CP 3-CP 8]: four claims to the ship and cargo on behalf of merchants in Copenhagen, Sweden, with an attestation as to the ship's cargo;
  • [CP 8]: allegation;
  • [CP 9]: list of cargo belonging to the King of Denmark, first minister and several merchants;
  • [CP 10-CP 13]: exhibits in French realating to diplomatic issues raised by the capture, including a memorial from Monsieur Pauly, Danish Resident in England, letters from Monsieurs Alefeld and Jessen, at least some intended for William Trumbull;
  • [CP 14-CP 16]: attestations sent in from Stockholm, with translation.

[Decision: ship restored, cargo part condemned 21 October 1697; appealed. An appeal for further examinations relating to the condemned cargo: 'false and scandalous and reflection upon this court and the publick justice of the nation'].
