Description

Captured ship: Destiny of La Rochelle (commander Thomas Bruneau).

History: a French privateer (50 tons, 4 guns) bound from La Rochelle on a cruise; taken during July or August 1697 on the Banks of Newfoundland by the privateer Great Russell (Andrew Elton commanding), and brought into St Johns, Newfoundland.

Court Papers:

  • [CP 1-CP 2]: two attestations stating that the Destiny was captured roughly around the same time as two other French privateers, Les Trois Amis (François Arneau commanding) and St François (Jacques Aubert commanding);
  • [CP 3]: docket, still attached to the ship's papers.

Ship’s Paper numbered SP 1, letter of marque.

[Decision: ship condemned, 14 April 1698]
