Description

Captured ship: Daystar or Etoile du Jour of Auray (master Jean Micheau or Michaud).

History: a French merchant ship (90 tons, 4 guns) bound from the River Seudre to Dieppe or Honfleur, laden with salt; taken on 30 November / 10 December 1695 'neare the casketts' [Les Casquets] off Alderney by the privateers Defiance (John Gruchy commanding) and Monmouth Galley (John Tupper commanding) but the two were separated by bad weather and only the Defiance brought the Etoile du Jour into Southampton.

  • [CP 2]: examinations taken at Jersey, the first set relating to alleged embezzlement by Gruchy;
  • [CP 3]: inhibition;
  • [CP 4]: examinations taken at Guernsey, the second set relating to alleged embezzlement;
  • [CP 5-CP 9]: papers from legal proceedings at St Peter Port, Guernsey, probably relating to alleged embezzlement, including a substitution, commission, examinations and a docket;
  • [CP 10]: docket, still attached to the ship's papers.

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-SP 4, including a ship's pass and certificates.
