Description

Captured ship: Gustavus or Great Gustavus of Carlshaven (master Willam Westberg).

History: a Swedish merchant ship (300 tons) bound from Bordeaux to Carlshaven, laden with wine, brandy, turpentine, molasses, rosin, planks, paper and prunes; taken on 8/18 August 1697 off the Lizard by HMS Brittania (William Bokenham commanding), and brought into Plymouth.

Court Papers numbered CP 1-CP 10:

  • [CP 1]: two examinations;
  • [CP 2-CP 4]: three claims to the ship and cargo on behalf of merchants in Carlshaven, Gothenburg and Stockholm;
  • [CP 5-CP 8]: copies of ship's papers sent in from Carlshaven, attestation sent in from Stockholm, both with translations;
  • [CP 9]: abstracts and translations of 25 ship's papers [some of these papers were restored];
  • [CP 10]: docket for the ship's papers.

Ship’s Papers numbered SP 1-2, 4-6, 11-13, 15-18, bills of lading.

[Decision: ship restored, cargo part condemned, 9 December 1697].
