Description

Captured ship: Greax or Bunch of Grapes of Stockholm (master Frans Hendrick Backer).

History: a Swedish merchant ship (260 tons) bound from St Martin de Re to Riga, laden with salt and wine; taken on 20/30 June 1697 off the Lizard by HMS Torbay (John Harlow commanding), and brought into Plymouth.

Court Papers numbered CP 1-CP 4:

  • [CP 1-CP 2]: two claims to the ship and cargo on behalf of merchants in Stockholm and Amsterdam;
  • [CP 3]: three examinations;
  • [CP 4]: attestation as to the ownership and loading of the ship's cargo.

[Decision: ship and cargo restored, 3 September 1697].
