Description

Captured ship: La Grande Guerre of Dunkirk (commander Jacob Oleus or Michael Jacob).

History: a French privateer (8 tons, 2 guns, 16 men) bound from Dunkirk on a cruise; taken on 1/12 December 1696 off Hastings by HMS Maidstone (George Clements commanding), and brought into Rye.

Court Papers numbered CP 1-CP 2:

  • [CP 1]: one examination;
  • [CP 2]: docket for the ship's papers.

Ships Papers numbered SP 1-SP 4, letter of marque with a copy, muster roll, certificate.

[Decision: ship condemned, 17 December 1696].
