Description

Captured ship: Golden Ryer or Herne of Tonningen (master Martin Eazust).

History: a Holstein merchant ship (galliot hoy, 60 tons) bound from Newcastle to Tonningen, laden with coal; taken on 22 May / 1 June 1694 off Hamburg by the French privateer Auror (Janain commanding), retaken on 29 May / 8 June 1694 off the North Foreland by HMS Jersey (Richard Paul commanding), and brought into Margate.

Court Papers numbered CP 1-CP 9:

  • [CP 1-CP 2]: five examinations;
  • [CP 3-CP 7]: two claims to the ship and cargo on behalf of merchants in Tonningen and Hamburg, with three attestations as to the ship's voyage and cargo;
  • [CP 8-CP 9]: inventory, commission of appraisement.

[Decision: ship and cargo restored, paying salvage 2 August 1694].
