Description

Captured ship: St George of Hamburg (master George Kruse).

History: a Hamburg merchant ship (140 tons) bound from Altona to Lisbon, laden with rye and tar; seized on 18/28 November 1693 in the Downs by the privateer Success (Thomas Powell commanding), and brought into the Downs.

Court Papers numbered CP 1-CP 21:

  • [CP 1-CP 2]: interrogatories, three examinations;
  • [CP 3]: attestation as to the perishing nature of the cargo;
  • [CP 4-CP 6]: three sets of claims to the ship and cargo on behalf of merchants in Hamburg, Lisbon and Copenhagen;
  • [CP 7-CP 12]: a covering attestation with four further sets of attestations sent in from Hamburg, with translation;
  • [CP 13-CP 14]: attestation, with a copy of a sentence given in the High Court of Admiralty;
  • [CP 15]: certificate, issued at Hamburg relating to the ship's delivery of rye and tar at Lisbon;
  • [CP 16]: affidavit relating to an attempt to release the ship at Dover;
  • [CP 17-CP 20]: attestations and certificates sent in from Lisbon;
  • [CP 21]: list of expenses incurred during the case.
