Description

Captured ship: San Francisco Xavier e St Caetano of Lisbon (master Antonio Gonsala le Bre).

History: a Portuguese merchant ship (150 tons) bound from Lisbon to Amsterdam, laden with wine, brandy, sugar, wool, tobacco and brazilwood; taken on 5/15 May 1694 off Guernsey by HMS Foresight (Isaac Townsend commanding) and brought into Guernsey.

Court Papers numbered CP 1-CP 5:

  • [CP 1-CP 2]: four examinations;
  • [CP 3]: claim to the ship and cargo on behalf of merchants in Lisbon, listing dozens of claimants with merchant marks;
  • [CP 4]: a set of translations of the bills of lading, originally in Portuguese but translated into sheets of blank English bills, with a further translation of orders issued to the captain;
  • [CP 5]: a translated list of goods loaded at Lisbon.

[Decision: ship and cargo restored, 21 June 1694].
