Description

Folios 403-405. The memorial of William Latton, seeking recompense for £12,600 which he paid for the release of 144 captives when he was envoy to Barbary. The Emperor of Morocco's ministers and alcaldes had threatened to 'stake him fettered to the ground' for refusing to pay this 'national debt'. Folio 404. Copy of a letter from J Cole, dated on 14 January 1781, referring to the recipient as a former 'envoy to the Emperor of Morocco', requesting that the enclosure be delivered to Lord North. Verso: Copy of a letter, dated at 4 Maiden Lane, Covent Garden [Middlesex], requesting that the author of an enclosed letter be allowed to meet him, if the contents of the letter merit it. Folio 405. A note, from somebody who has been 'in exile in Barbary'. He mentions papers for Mr Reprean, his memorial to the King, and accounts from Mr Orde; and his own letters to: Lord North; Sir Grey Cooper; the Earl of Bath. Also mentions: Lord Shelburne; Lord Keppell, Lord Shuldham; Admiral Barrington; Admiral Arbuthnot; Captain Proby; ?Mr Centlivres Arquebusadewaten.
