Description

Folios 262-265. Information given by Mr Palmer to Viscount Hillsborough concerning the alleged communications channels used by spies facilitated by smugglers across the English Channel. Mentioning: John Oliver, of Rye [Sussex], master of a small vessel part-owned by Peter Cary, of Boulogne [France] and well-known in Dover [Kent] and Folkestone [Kent]; John Daniel of Rye, and his mate Thomas Turner, who is active in London, Lambhurst [Lamberhurst, Kent] and Chatham [Kent]; rowing hovlers [?hufflers] at Lydd [Kent] linked to to Mr Peter Poreau and Mr O'Hearn of Dunkirk, and Mr Haines of Newport [Nieuwpoort, Flanders]. Poreau is also linked to the cambric manufacture at Winchelsea [Sussex] for Noel and Co; has a brother called Corbeau; and is associated with the notorious ship master, Fall. At Hastings [Sussex] there is cutter, the 'Unicorn', commanded by Geog [?George] Wenham [Winham] or Mark Bayly [Bailey], owned by William [Wenham] and James Wenham. William Montagu, once confined to the lighters at Woolwich [Kent] has agents at Brussels, Ghent, Bruges, Ostend, Newport [Nieuwpoort], Dunkirk, Bolougne, Blankenberg [Blankenberge], Sluice [Hellevoetsluis], Flushing, Calais, Rotterdam, The Hague and Amsterdam [Netherlands]. Also mentions: Deal [Kent] and Margate [Kent]; Mr Cullen a merchant in Flushing; Captain John Ratcliffe, master of a minch boat from Dover; Mr Fagg, of Lydd; and Elias Fletcher.
