Description

Folios 231-238. A letter from [secretary] Anth [Anthony] Todd [of the post office] to Sir Stanier Porten, dated at the post office [London] concerning clashes, in Lisbon [Portugal], between sailors of the 'Expedition' packet boat and those of a Portuguese customs house barge. Advises that Captain Dashwood believes packet boats are now likely to be searched. Gives a schedule for the 'Hanover' and the 'Hampden' sailings from Falmouth [Cornwall]. With the following enclosures: Folio 232. Extract of a letter from William Hudson of Lisbon to Charles Jackson, G P O London, dated 18 August 1781. Folio 233. Translation of a letter from [Portuguese Secretary of State] Monsieur Ayres de Sa e Mello to [ambassador] Robert Walpole, dated at Bellas [?Belas, Portugal], concerning the incident. Folio 235. Copy of a circular letter for commanders of packet boats. Henceforth, justices are to visit packet boats, and 'every caution taken to avoid scandalous counterbands [contraband]'. Folio 236-238. A letter from Wm [William] Hudson to Todd, dated at Lisbon.
