Description

Folios 163-177. A letter from [under-secretary John Bell] to the Earl of Hillsborough, dated at St James's [Middlesex] concerning smuggling vessels sailing between Boulogne [France] and Rye [Sussex] suspected of treasonable activity. Folio 165-166. A letter to William Dickinson, MP for Rye. Folio 167. Dickson to Bell, dated at Queen Anne Street [Middlesex]. Enclosing: Folio 168-169. Copy of a letter from Dickinson to Thomas Lamb seeking more information and urging further discrete inquiries; it mentions an 'Eliott', a 'Butler', and Lamb's letter of 19 July [not filed here]. Folio 170. A letter to Dickinson, dated at St James's. Folio 171. Dickinson to Bell, dated at Queen Anne Street. Enclosing: Folio 172. Copy of Lamb to Dickinson, dated at Rye. Refers to vessels commanded by John Oliver and John Turner, whose father was from Boulogne. Also mentions: Sir George Colebrooke; Mr Colebrook; Mr Swinton, a printer; [the trial of François Henri de] [Francis Henry] de la Motte; smuggling of tea, brandy smuggling, even in war time. Folio 174. A letter to Anthy [Anthony] Todd [secretary to the post office], dated at St James's. Orders to open and copy letter to John Turner of Rye. Folio 175. Dickinson to Bell, dated at Queen Anne Street. Enclosing: Folio 176. Copy of a letter from Lamb to Dickinson, dated at Rye. A box to Turner has been opened and contents examined.
