Folios 126-127. The petition John Cross, engineer, dated at 1, 2 and 3 St Martins Lane, Charing Cross, Strand, [Middlesex], in favour of his 'warlike inventions'. These he displayed with success at Woolwich in 1767 before General Williamson of the [Royal] Engineers and officers of the train; but which met with no favour from the Board of Ordnance, including Sir Chas [Charles] Frederick and General [?Henry Seymour] Conway. Intimates that he might have sold his invention to an enemy power; and requests an appointment as lieutenant, by land or sea. Folio 127. A printed sheet, describing Cross's several inventions, for projecting explosive power remotely, at sea and on land, in the manner of mines, including by use of floating batteries, submarine cannon, and horse-drawn batteries.
