Folios 121-122. A letter from J W Hammond to Sir Stanier Porten, dated at Dover [Kent], concerning a French rowing boat, the 'Tryal', which beached below Dover Castle, and whose crew immediately deserted her. Customs officers Lieutenant Star and Lieutenant Lacy searched the town, and detained John Arlington. Upon examination, he and George Jemmit provided additional names of the crew: Thomas Robinson, commander, aged about 30, and Scottish; his brother-in-law John Hood; Joseph Lloyd; Charles Brown; and Wm [William] Oxley, boy. Jemmit says the boat was owned by 'one Smith, of Dunkirk, was used for smuggling, and came from Calais. They landed in Dover after an attempt was made to force them to enlist 'for Americans'. Mentions: Major Turrein, the deputy mayor [of Dover] Phineas Stringer; and the Regulating Officer, Captain Bray. Adds, that there are large numbers of British seamen at Dunkirk and other ports of France.
