Description

Folios 109-119A. The case of Lieutenant [Thomas] Mante, late of the 77th Regiment of Foot, against Secretary at War Lord Barrington, commander of forces in North America General [Thomas] Gage, and others. Concerns the stoppage of his pay; and his employment [?as a spy] by the French, after a proposition from Monsieur de Frances and the ambassador the Comte de [Count] Guines, which Mante alleges was authorised by Mr Robinson, in the name of Lord North. Contains copies of other documents: Folio 109. Guines's certificate, dated at London on 19 July 1772. Folio 110. A letter from Mante to Guines, dated at Paris on 7 November 1774. Folio 110 (verso). [Charles Gravier] Comte de [Count] Vergennes to Mante, dated at Versailles on 11 December 1774. Folio 111. A letter from Monsieur Turgot, controller general of finances, to Mante, dated at Versailles on 16 December 1774. Folio 111 (verso) Turgot to Mante, dated at Versailles on 16 February 1775. Folio 112. Mante to Lord North, undated. Folio 113. Lord North to Mante, dated at Downing Street [Middlesex] on 25 July 1776. Folio 115. Mante to Robinson, [undated circa February 1781]. Folio 115-117. Mante to Robinson, [undated circa March 1781] Folio 117-118. Mante to Lord North, dated at London on 2 April 1781. Describes: his military service in North America, including as major of brigade under General Bradstreet; and his employment and residency in France, land-holding, tobacco cultivation, arrest in 1778 on a lettre de cachet, and connections with Dieppe. Also mentions: the sieges of Belleisle, Martinique and Havana; the Duke d'Aiguillon; Marquis [Louis François] de Monteynard; and the Archbishop of Rouen.
