Description

Captured ship: Concord of Glasgow (master George Lyon).

History: a Scottish merchant ship (180 tons, 22 guns), bound from Madeira to Rotterdam or Amsterdam, laden with wine; taken on 17/26 July 1689 off Brest by two unnamed French warships, retaken five hours later by HMS St Albans (John Layton commanding), and brought into Plymouth.

  • [CP 1-CP 2]: interrogatories, two examinations;
  • [CP 3-CP 6]: claim and attestion by Glasgow merchants William and James Bogill as to their ownership of the Concord, with an exhibited letter and an allegation.
  • [CP 7-CP 10]: attestation given at Rochefort, with translation, and a supporting English attestation stating that George Lyon and his crew are being held as prisoners of war at Rochefort;
  • [CP 11-CP 13]: claim and attestation by two English merchants at Lisbon, Robert Gillingham and Henry Rous, as to their ownership of the cargo, with an annexed list of rigging and tackle;
  • [CP 14-CP 16]: attestation given at Lisbon in Portuguese and an allegation on behalf of Gillingham and Rous, four exhibited letters in English, some from the Widow of Abraham Van Rincom, translation of the attestation, interrogatories;
  • [CP 17-CP 18]: inventory, commission of appraisement.
