Description

Folios 79-85. Folio 79. Letter dated at Whitehall from W [William] Knox [Under Secretary of State for the Colonies] to William Fraser enclosing:- Folio 80. Extract of a letter dated Antigua 16 March 1780 from Governor William Mathew Burt, Governor of the Leeward Islands, to Lord George Germain [Secretary of State for the Colonies] forwarding the proceedings in the Court of Vice Admiralty of St Christopher's [St Kitt's] against the brigantine 'Britannia' about which Baron [or Monsieur de] Dreyer has complained, the vessel and its cargo legally condemned having been proved 'to be the property of His Majesty's rebellious subjects at Boston' which Burt hopes will convince the Baron and the Danish King of the propriety of the Court's sentence. Folios 81-82. Extract of a letter dated at Antigua 20 December 1779 from Governor Burt to Lord George Germain regarding Dreyer's complaint against the inhabitants of the Virgin Islands for seizing the sloop 'Nancy' and the brig 'Britannia'. Burt also refers to the problems he has had with those to whom he has issued Letters of Marque and about whom he receives frequent complaints of their cutting vessels out of the Roads of [the Dutch colonies] St Eustatius, Saba and St Martins in relation to which he encloses:- Folios 83-85. Extracts from a letter dated 22 November 1779 from Pieter Runnells, Governor of St Eustatius and Burt's answer dated 30 November 1779.
