Administrative / biographical background

The National Museum of Science and Industry (NMSI) is a group of British museums, comprising:

The Science Museum in London. The National Media Museum in Bradford, West Yorkshire. The Science Museum, Swindon. The National Railway Museum in York. The National Railway Museum at Shildon in County Durham ('Locomotion'). The Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester (from January 2012).

NMSI was established in 1973 and run directly by the UK Government until 1984, after which NMSI acquired the status of a non-departmental public body, operating within the public sector (as a charity), but separately from its associated sponsoring government department, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS).

From 1 April 2012, the group became known as the Science Museum Group.
