The Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, houses one of the largest art collections in England, outside of London.
The collection has its origins in the early 19th century with the accumulation of a number of important art collections in and around Liverpool. However, it was not until 1873 that Andrew Barclay Walker (1824-1893), a Liverpool brewer and alderman offered to present a gallery to Liverpool to commemorate his term as mayor. Walker donated £20,000 towards the new gallery. Subsequently the gallery enjoyed substantial growth and underwent a number of renovations, notably in 1931-33 and 1999-2002.
