Sudley House in Aigburth, Liverpool, contains the collection of George Holt. Holt, a ship owner and merchant, purchased the house in 1883 and began installing his collection of English landscapes and genre pieces, prints and Chinese porcelain.
George Holt died in 1896 and custody of the collection passed to his daughter Emma who continued to live at Sudley House until her death in 1944. The house and collection was bequeathed to the city of Liverpool.
