The Lady Lever Art Gallery was opened in 1922 by William Lever, 1st Viscount Leverhulme, and dedicated to the memory of his wife. In his lifetime Lever collected over 20,000 works of art. Lever acquired many of the pieces in the gallery through the bulk purchase of others' collections. This collection includes paintings, sculpture, furniture, ceramics, textiles and ethnographic objects.
