Description

Folios 235-245. A letter from the Earl of Poulett, dated at Hinton [House, Hinton St George, Somerset] concerning French prisoners of war in Okehampton [Devon] who complain of being insulted by the 'lower rank of the inhabitants'. Enclosing: Folio 236-237. A letter from George Bickford, dated at Dunsland near Hatherly [?Hatherleigh, Devon] on 22 October 1778, mentioning Mr Gullot. Folio 238. Another letter from Bickford, dated at Dunsland, on 17 October 1778. Folios 239-244. Affidavits relating to disturbances following an allegation of theft from a garden by a French prisoner, made by: Christopher Lethbudge and Thomas White, surgeons; Thomas Smith Glubb; John Colling; Jonas Westaway; William Cleave; Thomas Rowe, peruke-maker; Jonathan Jones, miller; William Brock, scrivener; Thomas Ford, cooper; William Coram, Inn-holder; William Pedler, blacksmith and shop-keeper; John Harris, cordwainer; Henry Gale, joiner; Susanna Newcombe, shop-keeper; John Brooking, Inn-holder; Benjamin Press, Inn-holder; Noah Cartwright, Inn-holder. Sworn before: Tho [Thomas] Luxmoore, Thomas Pearce Hockin; and Robert Hawkes, mayor. Also mentions: Mr Vickry, former mayor; John Landick; Michael Jones, militiaman; and Jonathan Jones. Folio 245. Petition of Honourable Esquare [?Esquire] Brigfort, prisoner on parole at Okehampton, supported by 48 signatures [?of other French prisoners].
