Folios 187-195. A letter from the Duke of Richmond to Viscount Weymouth, dated at Goodwood [House, Sussex], advising of riots prompted by the raising of the militia. Meeting of magistrates were disrupted by mobs in: the rape of Bramber [Sussex], where Mr [Charles] Goring, MP for Shoreham reported disturbances at Henfield [Sussex]; and the rape of Arundel [Sussex] where disrupted were reported at Petworth [Sussex]. There were no disturbances at the rapes of Lewes [Sussex]; Pevensey [Sussex] and Battel [Battle, Sussex]. Richmond speculates that smugglers were behind the riots. Folio 190. Draft to Richmond, advising of military orders sent to commanding officers. Folio 191-192. Richmond to Weymouth, dated at Goodwood. Report more riots planned at Beeding [Sussex], and suggesting the Regiment of Dragoons, Scotch Grey's be deployed. Folio 193-194. Richmond to Weymouth, dated at Lewes, mentioning a mob assembling at Brighthelmstone [Sussex]. Folio 195. Printed handbill, signed by William Ellis, clerk to the general meetings, advertising a meeting of Lieutenants, deputy lieutenants, and justices of the peace, held at Lewes concerning the riots.
