Description

Folios 171-177. A letter from principle inhabitants to the Earl of Suffolk, dated at Whitehaven [Cumberland], requesting protection, following an attack by men from two boats launched form a privateer called 'Ranger', John Paul Jones commander. The vessel hired at Brest [France] and accompanied by French frigates. Endorsed: 'returned from Charleton'; and Richard Fletcher; Isaac Shelsick; and Joseph Mayson. Signed by: Samuel Martin; Peter Gale; John Searjeant; Tho [Thomas] Martley; Daniel Baynes; William Grayson; Rich [Richard] Pastrer; John Coupland; ?Isaac Stephenson; W Brownrigg; Heny [Henry] Ellison; William Wordworth collr [?collector]; Geo [George] Hall, comp [comptroller]; Thom [Thomas] Lutwidge; Saml [Samuel] ?Etter; John Hodgson; Thos [Thomas] ?Harrison. Folio 173-176. Letter from Ellison and W Brownrigg, dated at Whitehall. Relays information on the plundering of Lord Selkirk's house in Scotland by David Freeman, received from the Customs House at Kirkcudbrightshire. Folio 174. Freeman's examination, concerning his birth in Ireland 22 years ago, his passage to America as a child with Thomas McMillan, his residence in Worster and Linster, Massachusetts, his capture by rebels while travelling to New York, and his travels aboard the 'Ranger', including the River Nantz [?Loire river, Nantes], and Quiberon Bay. Folio 175. Freeman's further examination, reporting the spiking of guns at Whitehaven fort, and the burning of ships and parts of town. Folio 177. A copy of the reply to Ellison and Brownrigg, dated at St James's.
