Description

Folios 78-79. Minutes of [George Jackson's] conversation with Mr Bond about the shipwrights. 'Captain Read of the 'Aurora' sailed last Monday. Had no passengers on board. Captain Lawrence of the 'Earl of Dunmore' off the Red House, Deptford - 300 tons - will sail if he can get passengers by the end of the month - His terms £6 6s 0d a man - will nor take more than fifty - Has six names on the list, the first which is Searle. His owners must not know of the transaction. The men who go will be received by the Committee at New York. Hopes if the men do not get work immediately they will not object to join the Provincials in support of the common cause - must consult a particular friend, whom he afterwards said was Alderman [William] Lee - once proposed to bring the Aldermen; but on recollection agreed it would not be proper at present - If the men are not able to pay for their passage, may they hope for encouragement from the Alderman? Opinion the Alderman will pay for them; but declined saying more on that point till he could speak to the Alderman upon it, which he will do tomorrow. Bond and Lawrence to meet Sunday 10 o'clock'.
