Description

Folios 65-70. Folios 65-66. Anonymous and lengthy letter signed in a different hand 'Yours a true Englishman' and addressed to the Earl of Rochford, Bercley [sic, Barclay] Square, London. He encloses a post script of a letter from Dermot Carleton, a half pay lieutenant, to his late commanding officer. As to the Secretary at War's advertisement to all half pay officers who will serve again the writer comments 'That cannot reach America where there are many; It is well worth turning in your mind, how His Majesty may avail himself of their zeal, fidelity and gallantry, if I said revenge to one of the Americans I should be right'. He goes on to report the news brought by a ship arrived at Cork from Boston, in particular mentioning the condition and numbers of rebels around Boston. The writer says that while Lord Rocford 'nearly knows' the King's enemies at Philadelphia, until Boston and Philadelphia are taken by some part of our army he 'never will know his friends' and goes on to set out the tactical advantages to be gained if General Howe establishes himself at New York. The writer urges action and is highly critical of the Navy and Lord Sandwich. Folios 67-68. The post script referred to in which Carleton mentions the Honourable Oliver Delancey, John Walls, Henry White, Doctor [Myles] Cooper, President of [Kings] College [New York], Lieutenant-Colonel Maunsell, the Honourable John Walls, Roger Morris, Henry Cruger, Donald Campbell 'a half pay lieutenant from the Reduced Americans, a Highlander that is as high a rebel as any in the country', Captain Richard Montgomery 'lately of the 17th Regiment' married to Judge Livingston's daughter (nick named Foxface), Major [Horatio] Gates now promoted Adjutant-General by the Continental Congress, General [George] Washington, General [Charles] Lee and Major Philip Skene. Endorsed 'Read by The King'.
