Description

Folios 36-41. Folio 36. Petition of Frances Bayley [Bailey] to Lord Rochford. The petitioner having been sentenced at the Old Bailey to transportation for stealing silk stockings was removed from the ship on account of extreme illness and is now dangerously ill in Newgate. She prays to be released. Her petition is recommended by Tho [Thomas] Richards, curate and John Moore lecturer of St Sepulchre's, William Dorrell, Jno [John] Farmer, Josph Clark, Tho [Thomas] Smith, H Skinner, Wm [William] Pears, Tho [Thomas] Wm [William] Robinson, Tho [Thomas] Bredale and Richd [Richard] Thomas. Folio 37. Petition of Francis Baily [sic] to the King praying to be removed from the transport ship in order to be cured of her woman's disorder. C ?Wasmus surgeon testifies that the 'petitioner who is afflicted with such disorder cannot take in hand to cure except be sent on shore'. Signed Francis Baily. Folio 38. Petition of several inhabitants of the parish of St 'Pulcars' [Sepulchre's] to the King on behalf Frances Bailey praying for mercy 'that her distressed infants may not become destitute through the loss of their mother' who is now on board the transport ship in the Thames. Signed by Thomas Richards, John Farmer and Thomas Smith churchwardens, William Dorrell, Joseph Clark, Randell Smith, H Skinner gold smith, Richard Weston and John Gardner. Folio 39. Affidavit of Thomas William Robinson of Dean Street, Soho surgeon sworn at Guildhall, London before John Wilkes Mayor that if Frances Bailey continues to be confined in Newgate 'she cannot many days survive' and believes her to be worthy of clemency. He mentions John Smith a watch maker of St Sepulchre's and Doctor Bredal of Maddox Street, Hanover Square. Folio 40. John Glyn Recorder of London's report on the case of Frances Bailey. Dated ?April 29 1775.
