Folios 25-26. Brief to counsel submitted by [William] Chamberlayne, Solicitor for the Treasury, to the Attorney-General seeking his Opinion as to whether an advertisement placed by John Horne in several daily and evening papers published on 9 June 1775 and the printers thereof are guilty of any and what offence and if they are to advise the proper steps to be taken against them or any of them. The advertisement relates to the £100 collected at a special meeting of the Constitutional Society at the 'Kings Arms Tavern' Cornhill, and resolved 'to be applied to the relief of the widows, orphans and aged parents of our beloved American fellow subjects, who faithful to the character of Englishmen, preferring death to slavery, were, for that reason only, inhumanly murdered by the King's troops at or near Lexington and Concord in the Province of Massachusetts on the 19 of last April' the £100 to be paid by Horne into the hands of Messieurs Brownes and Collison on the account of Doctor [?Benjamin] Franklin and that he be requested to apply the same to the before mentioned purpose. The Opinion is signed by E [Edward] Thurlow and Al [Alexander] Wedderburn.
