Letter dated at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich from Nevil Maskelyne, Astronomer Royal, to the Earl of Suffolk requesting leave of absence from his post in order to go to Scotland to oversee the experiment to measure 'the attraction of a hill in the Highlands' which, if successful, 'will greatly illustrate Sir Isaac Newton's doctrine concerning the general gravitation of matter'.
