Description

Folios 175-182. Folios 175 and 182. Letter dated at Mortimer Street, Cavendish Square [London] from Major Hugh Debbieg to Lord Rochford relating to the secret expedition to France and the French and Spanish coasts made by him under orders between the beginning of July 1767 and the end of March 1768. Debbieg says that he does not believe there are many instances 'of an officer's having performed extraordinary services upon a plan of intended hostility to the foe; who has been called upon by the King's servants, and sent into the King's closet to explain his plans and projects for conducting the vindictive arms of his country into that of the enemy; without receiving some mark of honour from his sovereign, proportional to the danger of the enterprise and the merit of the execution'. He asks that 'my humble pretensions and services' be laid before the King, that these be taken into account together with his disappointments and that the King 'will be graciously pleased to bestow such marks of his Royal favour as in His Majesty's known goodness shall seem most proper'. Folios 176-181. 'Narrative of a journey performed by Major Hugh Debbieg in the country and upon the coasts of France and Spain between the beginning of July 1767 and the end of March 1768.
