Folios 72-76. Folios 72-73. Letter dated 12 at night at Mansion House from the Lord Mayor, James Townsend, to the Earl of Suffolk that his under-Marshal, whom he had sent to Spitalfields to get information, was introduced to about 50 weavers in a back room of the 'Ship' alehouse in Bacon Street where the topic of conversation was the handbill distributed the day before. He convinced them of the imprudence and danger of acting as urged in the handbill and that it must have been 'some enemy to their wellbeing who had suggested such a measure. On the basis of the Under-Marshal's account Townsend is convinced that the intention of assembling did not originate with the weavers and that the enclosed letter and handbill put the matter beyond doubt. Folios 74 and 76. Anonymous letter addressed to the Lord Mayor enclosing: Folio 75. A printed handbill addressed to the coalheavers calling on them to rise up 'as one man and wait humbly upon the King at St James every day' so that he may know of their distress 'and remove his evil Counsellers'. They must not be guilty of any disorder but only show themselves to the King that he may see their distress every day.
