Folios 54-55. Letter dated at Millbank Street from W [William] Brereton to Lord Rochford that he has been unsuccessful in his applications to the King, Privy Council and the Treasury because he has been unable to state the nature of his services; he 'knew some transactions at Manila would not bear the light nor ought to be known to the public, especially at this juncture when we are like to have disputes with the powers on the Continent'. He says that however much he may wish to conceal the mismanagement of some people in command at Manila necessity will oblige him to reveal those transactions to Rochford 'in whose Department they are cognisable' and where the source of his sufferings originated. He entreats Rochford to do him the justice to hear his story and to support him with his protection.
