Description

Folios 263-267. A letter from Sir A [Abraham] Isaac Elton to the Earl of Rochford, dated at Bristol [Gloucestershire], concerning Joshua Dudley [who alleges arson caused the fire at the dockyards in Portsmouth, Hampshire, on 27 July 1770]. Confirms Dudley was employed by [Jacob] Player, merchant; and provides evidence of his movements, confirming his presence in Bristol [Gloucestershire] at the time of the fire. Mentions: the 'Indian Arms [public house], Gosport [Hampshire]; the 'London coffee house', London; the 'Sun' public house] in Stokes Croft, Bristol; and Dudley's father in Ireland. Enclosing: Folio 265. A letter from John Dudley to his son Joshua Dudley, a merchant of Castle Green, Bristol, dated at Mount Dudley [Ireland]. Marked 'A'. He's coming soon to Bath [Gloucestershire]. And folio 266: A letter from Joshua Dudley to Player, dated at Gosport, and sent via Sarum [Salisbury, Wiltshire], denying he has misappropriate any of his money. He has no plans of any second marriage, but plans to settle at Birmingham [Warwickshire]. Mentions: Troughton and Co [Company]: Burgh; and Maynard. Also mentions debts owed by: Miss Dingle of Exon [Exeter, Devon]; the late Mr Graham at Cowes, Isle of Wight [Hampshire]; Miss Trott at Martock [Somerset]; and Miss Garland. Folio 267. A letter from [the Earl of] Rochford to the Lord Mayor of London [Brass Crosby], enclosing Elton's letter at folio 263.
