Folios 134-139. A letter from Lord Holdernesse to the Earl of Rochford, dated at Sion Hill [Syon, Middlesex]. Folio 135. Copy of Thomas Bateman Lane, mayor of Dover and speaker of the Brotherhood and Guestling or General Assembly of the Cinque Ports, to the Earl of Holderness. Concerns: records kept at Rye [Sussex]; petitions from fishermen of Rye, Hastings [Sussex] and Dover [Kent] over intrusions by French fishermen; complaints about taking under-sized fish; a court hearing, overseen by representatives including Messrs Hammond and Fabrace, and Messrs Stringer and Robert Broadly. Folio 137-139. Copy and original of the petition of the mayor and officers of the Cinque Ports. Refers to an Assembly of the Brotherhood at New Romney, Kent, on 23 July 1771; the scale of French fishing on the English coast; and the fisheries role as 'nursery of seamen' for the fleet [Royal Navy]. The original is on parchment, with a seal depicting a horse, rider and attendant, and inscribed 'Jus Dovori Ae Sicillum'.
