Description

Folios 82-86. A letter from Tho [Thomas] Nicholes [Nichols] justice of the peace for Middlesex to the Earl of Rochford in favour of William Bland convicted, in April 1771, for stealing a handkerchief. Folio 83-84. The petition for pardon of William Bland, weaver, convicted at Hick's Hall, St John Street, [London]. Signed by: John Curtis, No 8 the Shoreditch [London]; Broughton, grocer and tea dealer; Wm [William] Bradley, master weaver, Shoreditch; Jas [James] Burt, master shoe maker, Shoreditch; William Goodman, churchwarden; Jeremiah Chegg, churchwarden of St Leonards, Shoreditch; and Fr [Francis] Town. Folio 85-86. The petition of Rebecca Bland, wife of the prisoner, in her third pregnancy. Signed by: John Herbing, curate of St Leonards, Shoreditch; William Bradley, master weaver; John Curtis, No 88; W Broughton, 82; Jeremiah Chegg; and Sampson Jessop, churchwarden. Folio 86. Affidavit of justice Thomas Nicoll, confirming that Bland's sentence of transportation was brought down only because wrong evidence of a former conviction was considered.
