Description

Folios 226-229. Folio 226. Letter dated at the General Post office from Anth [Anthony] Todd to Sir Stanier Porten enclosing:- Folio 227. Letter dated at the Post Office, Bath [Somerset] from Wm [William] Maxwell to Anthony Todd that he is holding the warrant issued by the mayor and senior justice of Bath for the arrest of Edward Cavendish should such a person call for a letter at the 'White Hart' inn. He has acquainted Mr Woodhouse, the landlord, with the whole circumstance. Folio 228. Letter dated at the General Post Office from Anthony Todd to William Maxwell giving him instructions in relation to the enclosed (folio 229) copy of a letter sent to Lord Rochford, signed Edward Cavendish and Friends, the contents of which 'are to be kept a profound secret'. Cavendish's letter threatens the overthrow of the King and the killing of some of 'his hirelings' and goes on to say that he knows Rochford is 'secretly connected with the Stewart [Stuart] family' and 'shall expect your assistance and doesn't doubt his ready compliance'.
