Folios 172-174. Letter dated at London from Mr [?John] Cramond to [?Lord Rochford] setting out at great length his past services which lead him to propose the appointment of a British Consul-General in Paris. He ends his letter 'I would not presume to beg Your Lordship's recommendation to this consulship, by which I should be enabled to pass the few years I may have to live with some dignity and comfort in the service of my country, were I not conscious of having exerted myself upon every occasion to promote its commercial interest these 50 years, the knowledge several members of both houses of Parliament must have of this by my frequent examinations on commercial subjects before them, will I hope plead in my behalf'. He mentions the Duc de Choiseul [Étienne-François], [Jerónimo] Grimaldi [Chief Minister of Spain], [?] Walpole, Lord Harcourt, Count D'hirouville, Chevalier D'Arcy, the late Mr Trudayne, the Abbé Terray, Comptroller-General of France, and Holcker who has been given encouragement by the French.
