Description

Folios 163-167. Folios 163-165. Three notes all dated at Bow Street from Sir John Fielding to Sir Stanier Porten. Folio 163. Miles 'the Master of the Madhouse' says that Conyngham [Josias Cuningham] is in great want of necessaries. Sir John advises that the cost of Cuningham's treatment be fixed as soon as possible. Folio 164. Mr Miles reports that Doctor [John] Munro shall be able to send the plan which Miles proposes and the cost. Folios 165 and 167. That the messenger sent to visit Cuningham at Hoxton found 'him in safe custody and in good plight'. Folio 166. Memorandum. 'Sir John Fielding is of the opinion that Cuningham is so mischievous a madman, he ought to be confined in a madhouse, and a physician ordered to tend him to certify whether he be a lunatick or not. If he be found a lunatick there is reason to keep him confined, if not, he ought to be dealt with according to law, but in all events he thinks after what has past [sic], that he ought to be confined; Sir John thinks there is no occasion to be at the expense and trouble to apply for a Commission of Lunacy which is only necessary when property is concerned. Mr Francis says that Cuningham has confessed that he destroyed the orange trees in the garden at Kew Palace'].
