Folios 101-103. Memorandum of what passed on the trial of Jonathan Britain, at the Sessions at Bristol'. Jonathan Britain was before the court on four counts of forgery to which he refused to plead 'saying that he was brought there to be tried for some trifling offences of a private nature, while he was refused a hearing upon a matter of much greater importance, which concerned the whole nation, that he desired to be tried for the fire at Portsmouth Dock, and would claim the benefit of His Majesty's Pardon in the Gazette which he produced'. Britain's parting words to the court were that the King's word was not to be relied on.
