Folios 97-98. Letter dated at Hertford Street [London] from Edwd [Edward] Hooper requesting access to a few letters in the Paper Office that were written by 'one ?Mascal, a foreigner, who was employed as a spy at the Hague by Sir Leoline Jenkins: in one of these Mascal offered to assassinate or poison [the Earl of Shaftesbury]; and in one or more letters afterwards writes the 'tale' about Shaftesbury's death referred to by Sir John Dalrymple in his Memoirs. Endorsed 'granted, and a note to the Paper Office in consequence'.
