Folio 94. Letter from Bamber Gascoyne to [Lord Rochford] explaining that having been informed Rochford wanted to see that he had done his best but Rochford's orders arrived when he, Gascoyne, was in bed and asleep. He came to the office as ordered but still did not see Rochford. Gascoyne writes that he is 'now in my gown and slippers really at work for the State and would not change my dress or stir out this evening to be made Chancellor of the Exchequer'. He says that Tindal's letter is a misrepresentation, the rioters are still active between Chelmsford and Maldon and comments 'this Justice has purchased a temporary tranquillity not acted resolutely'.
