Description

Folios 78-83. Folios 78 and 81. Letter dated at Chesterfield Street [London] from A [Augustus] Hervey to Lord Rochford asking that he give the directions on the enclosed letter received express from Bury [Lancashire]. Folios 79-88. Letter dated at Bury from Jas [James] Oakes, Mayor of Bury, to the Honourable Augustus Hervey 'A Lord of Admiralty' that immediate application be made for troops to be sent as a riotous mob has assembled in the town and its neighbourhood obliging the meal-men and shopkeepers to sell them their goods at their own prices. With the letter is an undated note [written by Lord Rochford] requiring that the enclosed two letters be sent to Lord Barrington [Secretary at War]. Folios 82-83. Draft letter from [Lord Rochford] to the Secretary at War enclosing the preceding letters from Oakes and Hervey in relation to which it is the the King's pleasure that 'orders are to be given for a proper military assistance in support of the civil magistrates as shall be thought proper if it be found necessary to make application on that subject'. Written in the left hand margin alongside the words underlined 'if in case they shall find it necessary to apply for it'. Endorsed 'Read by The King'.
