Description

Folio 1: Title page.

Folio 2: Explanatory note. During the period of the War, papers of a confidential nature in the office of the C-in-C Home Fleet were filed in Packs (numbered separately from the non-confidential records) in a Series 001 to 0042 inclusive. Copies of germane telegrams were filed in these packs, but a complete set of all telegrams was also maintained. The secret packs were re-arranged by the GF Secretarial staff in February 1919, when papers considered unimportant were removed and destroyed, and the remainder re-indexed. They were received in this form by the Historical Section in April 1920, and bound as received, in a series of Volumes. The 1919 index will be found in the first volume (see ADM 137/1881) and extracts therefrom have been inserted in each succeeding volume. This volume is the 56th of the series Folio 3: Index of contents. Folios 4-5: Blank Folio 6: Subject page. Strategic and tactical matters.

Folios 7-40: 1. Blockade of North Sea Coast of Germany, August 1914.

Folios 8-12: Covering letter M 01137/No 816, 23 August 1911. Admiralty to Vice Admiral Sir George Astley Callaghan with memorandum and requesting return memorandum on instructions proposed for HM Ships in the occasion of a blockade of the coast of Germany.

Folios 13-20: Covering letter M 01137/5.S, 31 August 1911. Vice Admiral Commanding 1st and 2nd Divisions, Home Fleet to Admiralty with letter and enclosed draft order for officers commanding cruiser squadrons and destroyer flotillas detailed for operations on the German coast.

Folios 21-23: Letter M 01238/No 1023, 26 October 1911. Admiralty to Admiral Sir Francis Charles Bridgeman Bridgeman. Reply with comments on draft order issued under M 01137/5.S, 31 August 1911.

Folios 24-26: Copy of Addenda to Preliminary War Orders for: The Vice-Admiral Commanding 2nd Division Home Fleet, The rear Admiral Commanding 1st, 2nd and 3rd and 5th cruiser squadrons, The Commodores Commanding the 7th and 9th cruiser squadrons, The Commodore (T). “At the same time as orders are given for hostilities to be commenced, HM Government will proclaim a blockade of the whole of the North Sea Coast of the German Empire…”

Folios 27-40: Copy of publication. Miscellaneous No 4 (1910). Correspondence respecting the Declaration of London. Presented to both Houses of Parliament by Command of His Majesty. November 1910

Folios 42-45: Remarks on North Sea strategy. Enclosure in letter No 1266/HF7.S, 28 August 1913 from [?] to Admiralty.

Folios 46-74: Covering letter No 1266/HF7.S, 28 August 1913 from Admiral George Astley Callaghan to Admiralty with memorandum titled Naval Manoeuvres 1913. Remarks on North Sea Strategy.

Folios 75-91: Covering letter HF7.S, 18 September 1913 from C-in-C Home Fleets to Vice Admirals Commanding etc with copy of remarks on North Sea strategy recently sent to Admiralty.

Folios 92-99: Covering letter HF7.S, 18 September 1913 from C-in-C Home Fleets to Commodores Commanding Light cruiser squadrons etc with extracts of remarks on North Sea strategy recently sent to Admiralty dealing with the employment of cruisers, destroyers and submarines.

Folios 100-112: Covering letter HF7.S, 2 October 1913 from C-in-C Home Fleets to Vice Admirals Commanding etc. Further remarks following HF.S, 18 September 1913 viz., Review of the War Plan after the manoeuvres 1913; employment of destroyers in war.

Folios 113-126: Letter No 1472/HF7.S, 2 October 1913 from C-in-C Home Fleets to Admiralty, reference Admiralty letter M.0036/13, 22 July 1913 and enclosing paper titled Review of the War Plan after manoeuvres 1913 and requesting instructions from Their Lordships on points raised including “that it is necessary to abandon the plan of stationing Cruiser Observation Squadrons across the North Sea and to employ them in advance of and to cover the Battle Fleet…”

Folio 127: Covering letter HF7.S, 28 July 1914 to Vice Admiral Sir Douglas Austin Gamble enclosing remarks on North Sea strategy and employment of destroyers in war.
