Description

Folios 312-315. Folios 312-313. Letter from Teasdale Mowbray, Bishops Wearmouth, County Durham to the Secretary of State for the Northern Department [George Grenville] regarding James Balthezar Valkenier who 'is looked upon at the Port of Sunderland to come more for intelligence or worse motive than coals' and was therefore detained by Captain [John] Bover, Regulating Captain at Newcastle and Lieutenant [Samuel] Swinton on the Impress Service. He expresses concern that the compactness of the port at Sunderland renders it vulnerable to attack 'by an enterprising enemy'. Folios 314-315. Letter from Grenville to Mowbray that the King has commanded the case to be referred to the Admiralty and in the meantime Valkenier is to be kept in safe custody.
