Folios 299-307. Folios 299-300. Robert Chalmer of the parish of St Dionis Backchurch, London to the King. Petition for Letters Patent for his invention 'of a certain instrument or machine called a manuator which is so calculated and constructed that by the labour of one simple person only it will answer all the purposes of' wind, water or cattle mills'. He states that the machine will be of particular use in the grinding of sugar enabling the planters or manufacturers to export greater quantities more cheaply thereby leading to a reduction in its price. Referral to the Attorney or Solicitor-General signed by the Earl of Egremont. Folios 301-302. Robert Chalmer's affidavit in support of his petition. Folios 303-304. Solicitor-General's report to the King recommending that Robert Chalmer's petition be granted subject to the usual proviso for enrolment in Chancery of a written description. Folios 305-307. Warrant under the Royal Sign Manual for the preparation of Letters Patent to Robert Chalmer for the sole making and selling of his invention within Great Britain and the British colonies and plantations for the term of 14 years.
