Folio 161. Letter from Jam [James] Bayley to 'My Lord' giving the before mentioned John Jones's account of the events leading to his return to England before the expiration of his sentence of seven years transportation and his subsequent enlistment by Lieutenant Sampson into the Independent Company commanded by the Honourable Colonel Patrick McDowall. He says that he told Jones, 'an able bodied man and likely to make a good soldier', that he would endeavour to obtain the King's pardon on condition he would faithfully serve as a soldier to which Jones readily agreed.
