Folios 295-298. Folios 295-296. Letter from Arth [Arthur] Murphy to 'Sir' regarding the case of Captain [David] Ferguson charged with four murders on board his ship [the 'Betsey'] bound from Antigua to Norfolk, Virginia. He was tried for one murder in Virginia, acquitted and sent home by [Norborne Berkeley] Lord Bottetourt, Governor of Virginia, to be tried for the other three. He was found guilty of the murder 'the boy'. Murphy mentions the mate John Hasty, the Solicitor for the Admiralty and the Solicitor-General. [From the letter it is apparent that Murphy was Ferguson's counsel]. Folios 297-298. Paper titled 'Circumstances which Capt [Captain] Ferguson presumes to state in his favour drawn from the evidence which appeared against him'. He names 'the boy' as Jack and the reason for 'chastising' him that Jack 'was not for taking the proper precautions against the severity of the weather in putting on the very clothes which the captain had provided him, parlicularly his shoes and stockings'.
